Common Testing Methods for Cosmetic Packaging

Cosmetics, as today’s fashionable consumer goods, not only require beautiful packaging, but also the best protection of the product during transportation or shelf life. Combined with cosmetic packaging testing and application requirements, the testing items and testing methods are briefly summarized.

Cosmetics transportation and packaging testing

In order for cosmetics to reach customers in good condition following transit, shelf display, and other links, they must have good transportation packaging. Currently, corrugated boxes are primarily used for the transportation packing of cosmetics, and the carton’s compressive strength and stacking test are its primary testing indicators.

1.Carton stacking test

During storage and transportation, cartons need to be stacked. The bottom carton must bear the pressure of multiple upper cartons. In order not to collapse, it must have suitable compressive strength after stacking, so stacking and maximum pressure Two-way detection of collapse force is very important.

2. Simulated transportation vibration test

During transportation, after the packaging is bumped, it may have a corresponding impact on the product. Therefore, we need to carry out an experiment to simulate the transportation vibration of the product: fix the product on the test bench, and let the product conduct the vibration test under the corresponding working time and rotation speed.

3.Packaging drop test

The product will inevitably fall during handling or use, and it is also crucial to test its drop resistance. Put the packaged product on the support arm of the drop tester, and do a free fall test from a certain height.

Cosmetic packaging printing quality inspection

Cosmetics have good visual aesthetics and are all beautifully printed, so it is more important to test the printing quality. At present, the routine items of cosmetic printing quality inspection are the abrasion resistance (anti-scratch performance) of the printing ink layer, the adhesion fastness detection, and the color identification.

Color discrimination: People usually observe colors in sunlight, so the fine color discrimination work in industrial production requires the lighting source to have a spectral power distribution that approximates real sunlight, that is, the D65 standard light source specified in CIE. However, in the color matching process, there is a very special phenomenon: the sample and the sample will appear in the same color under the first light source, but there will be a color difference under another light source, which is the so-called metamerism phenomenon, so the selection standard The light source box must have dual light sources.

Cosmetic self-adhesive label detection

Self-adhesive labels are widely used in cosmetic packaging. The testing items are mainly for the testing of adhesive properties of self-adhesive labels (self-adhesive or pressure-sensitive adhesives). The main testing items are: initial adhesion performance, stickiness Performance, peel strength (peeling force) three indicators.

Peel strength is an important indicator to measure the bonding performance of self-adhesive labels. Take the electronic tensile testing machine or the electronic peeling test machine as an example, the self-adhesive label is cut into 25mm wide with a sampling knife, and the self-adhesive label is rolled on the standard test plate with a standard pressing roller, and then the sample and the test plate are pre-rolled. To peel off, place the test board and the pre-peeled self-adhesive label in the upper and lower or left and right chucks of the intelligent electronic tensile test or electronic peel test machine respectively. Set the test speed to 300mm/min, start the test to test, and count the final peel strength KN/M.

Detection of other physical and mechanical indicators of cosmetic packaging and packaging materials

The mechanical properties of cosmetic packaging play a very important role during packaging, processing, transportation, and shelf life of cosmetics. Its quality directly determines the safety of food in the circulation. Summarize all the testing items mainly include: tensile strength and elongation, composite film peel strength, heat sealing strength, sealing and leakage, impact resistance, material surface smoothness and other indicators.

1.Tensile strength and elongation, peel strength, heat sealing strength, tearing performance.

Tensile strength refers to the maximum bearing capacity of a material before breaking. Through this detection, the package breakage and breakage caused by the insufficient mechanical strength of the selected packaging material can be effectively solved. Peel strength is a measure of the bonding strength between layers in a composite film, also known as composite fastness or composite strength. If the adhesive strength is too low, it is very easy to cause problems such as leakage caused by separation between layers during packaging use. Heat sealing strength is the strength of the detection seal, also known as heat sealing strength. In the process of product storage and transportation, once the heat seal strength is too low, it will cause problems such as cracking of the heat seal and leakage of the contents.

2.Impact resistance test

The control of the impact resistance of packaging materials can prevent the occurrence of damage to the packaging surface due to insufficient material toughness, and effectively avoid product damage due to poor impact resistance or drop performance of packaging materials in the circulation process. Generally, it is necessary to use a dart impact tester for testing. The falling ball impact tester determines the impact resistance of plastic films by the free falling ball method. This is a quick and easy test used by most cosmetic packaging manufacturers and cosmetic manufacturers to test the energy required to tear a film sample under specified free falling ball impact conditions. The energy of package breakage when 50% of the film sample fails under specified conditions.

3.Salt spray corrosion resistance test

When the product is shipped by sea or used in coastal areas, it will be corroded by sea air or mist. The salt spray test chamber is for surface treatment of various materials, including coatings, electroplating, inorganic and organic films, anodizing, and anti-rust oil. After anticorrosion treatment, test the corrosion resistance of the product.
